The Algarve will have enhanced security in the summer. The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) will receive an increase of 214 men on a permanent basis, the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) 294 and the Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF) 11. These figures were provided yesterday by the Minister of Internal Affairs Anabela Rodrigues, who was in Faro to present the security structure prepared for the summer in the region.
In addition to the permanent security structure, there will be also some extra reinforcement for local major events, such as, for example, the Biker’s Concentration in Faro. This support scheme will consist of 386 non-permanent agents from GNR.
Regarding the PSP, a reinforcement of 18 elements from the Intervention Corps (CI) national subunit is also expected, between July 13th and September 15th.
The municipalities that will receive the larger number of reinforcements are those of Albufeira, Loulé and Silves, since these are the ones that presented a higher crime rate last year.
To the minister, the purpose of this security structure is to “ensure that those who visit the Algarve may enjoy their summer in comfort and tranquility. Despite the results already achieved, we are not distracted and are working hard to improve what has been done so far and we will continue to work for the security of the country and those who visit us. "
To Anabela Rodrigues, “the reality we face in the Algarve is very demanding for the impact that seasonality has” but the minister believes that with the number of elements that will reinforce the security forces in the region "we will able to respond to the demands posed by the number of tourists at this time. "
On the other hand, Desidério Silva, president of the RTA, stressed the importance of having a hardened security in the summer in the Algarve, since “safety is a differentiating factor when choosing a destination for one’s holidays. From what has been presented here, this reinforcement continues last year's framework and last year went well, in terms of safety, and the Algarve remains a secure destination of excellence ".
